General Infusion Set Information:

When using an insulin pump, insulin is delivered to the body through thin, plastic tubing which ends in a soft, plastic (or if you choose, steel) needle.  This needle assembly is called a "cannula."  The cannula is the interface where insulin is injected into your body.  The tubing and cannula together comprise an "Infusion Set."

Infusion set insertion.

The cannula is inserted just under the skin by the use of an insertion needle.  If the cannula you're using is plastic, the insertion needle is removed, leaving the plastic cannula in place.  The cannula is typically placed on the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs.  Some infusion sets are capable of being inserted with an automatic inserter, which make it easier for children or those with limited dexterity; however, all cannulas may be inserted by hand.  Many people also choose to use numbing cream at the insertion location to ease the pain of insertion.
