Glucose Meters

Individuals with type 1 diabetes are recommended to check their blood glucose levels at least three times per day, if not more, by the American Diabetes Association. There is no recommendation for how often individuals with type 2 diabetes should check their blood sugar levels, however regular monitoring of blood glucose levels with a glucose meters will help control the disease.

Recommended Use of Glucose Meters

Every diabetic is different, but frequent monitoring is the best way to control blood sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association recommends testing before every meal, 2 hours after each meal, before bed, and at 3 am. Diabetics should also test at any other time when they feel symptoms of high or low blood sugar.

Learning to Use Glucose Meters

There are many different glucose meters on the market, making it difficult to know how to operate each one. That's why diabetics should seek the assistance of a diabetes educator when a new glucose meter is purchased. Educators train individuals how to use their glucose meter, watch them test their glucose levels, and ensure the individual is using their glucose meter properly.

Steps for Using Glucose Meters

Using glucose meters requires individuals to follow a series of steps each time. First, it is important for individuals to wash their hands and dry them before pricking their finger. Also, the testing area should be cleaned with alcohol and dried. The finger should be pricked and the blood applied to a test strip. All glucose meters are different, so the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding inserting the test strip into the meter. Finally, within a few seconds a numerical blood sugar reading will appear and it should be recorded.

Advantages of Glucose Meters

Glucose meters have many advantages, including allowing diabetics to control their blood sugar levels throughout the day. The glucose meters also make it easier for diabetics to determine what causes blood sugar highs and lows including stress, exercise, work, sickness, and diet. The results provided by glucose meters allow doctors to make changes in a patient's individualized care plan.

FDA Regulations for Glucose Meters

Before any glucose meters or testing strips may be marketed to the public they must be reviewed by the FDA. The review of glucose meters includes ensuring they are consistent and accurate at measuring all levels of blood glucose.
