Blood Glucose Monitors

Diabetics must use blood glucose monitors to check their blood sugar levels on a regular basis. Using blood glucose monitors requires some adjustment, but in time using this medical device becomes second nature. These medical devices generally use batteries and are small enough to carry in a pocket or purse.

Using Blood Glucose Monitors

Blood glucose monitors are used when diabetics prick their fingers and apply a small sample of blood to a testing strip. The testing strip is then placed within the blood glucose monitors and a reading is taken. This reading is the individual's current blood sugar level. The number displayed will determine whether the diabetic needs to eat or administer more insulin. Blood glucose monitors take up to a minute to return the results, but many are as fast as 5-25 seconds.

Tracking Readings from Blood Glucose Monitors

It is important for diabetics to keep track of their blood glucose readings long term. This information allows diabetics to monitor how well they are managing their blood sugar and what changes may be needed regarding insulin, diet, and exercise. Some blood glucose monitors have memories to store 100 or more readings while others allow for readings to be easily downloaded.

Types of Blood Glucose Monitors

There are many different types of blood glucose monitors on the market. This includes those that accommodate alternate testing sites, larger displays for the visually impaired, as well as some that use testing discs rather than testing strips. There are all kinds of blood glucose monitors that focus on different diabetic needs.

Where to Purchase Blood Glucose Monitors

Blood glucose monitors may be purchased at drugstores and medical supply stores. There are many websites that sell blood glucose monitors, too. It's important to only buy new blood glucose monitors as it is not sanitary to use monitors that have been used by others. Always consider the memory, size, cost, and the amount of blood needed for the monitor before making a purchase.

Recommended Use of Blood Glucose Monitors

Doctors will help diabetics create a personalized care plan. In each care plan the amount of times a blood glucose monitor should be used will be detailed. Some diabetics must check their blood sugar quite often while others will only require periodic checks. Individuals should only use blood glucose monitors under the care of a physician.
