Diabetic Testing

Diabetic testing of blood sugar levels is an important part of a diabetic’s life. Everyone has a target blood sugar level and regular diabetic testing allows for the diabetic to manage their disease and keep their levels within the normal range. Long term complications of diabetes are more likely to occur when a diabetic does not manage their disease properly. That’s why diabetic testing is so important.

Diabetic Testing with a Lancet

The most popular diabetic testing tool is a lancet. This is a small needle that is very sharp and allows for a quick blood sample for diabetic testing. The blood should be placed on a testing strip that is then placed in a meter to determine the blood sugar level. There are many different meters on the market varying in size, features, colors, and price.

Diabetic Testing on Alternative Sites

There are several new meters that use alternative sites for diabetic testing of blood sugar levels. The new meters are popular because they do not require as much blood, enabling diabetics to prick their thigh, forearm, upper arm, and even the base of the thumb for a blood sample. Diabetic testing of blood from the fingertips still provides the best results, especially when blood sugar levels are changing after eating, exercising, or taking medicine. Diabetics who feel the symptoms of low blood sugar levels should always check their blood sugar levels from their fingertips.

Diabetic Testing with Lasers

Lasers may also be used to draw blood for diabetic testing purposes. Pain is reduced when using a laser for diabetic testing however it is still not as popular as traditional lancets.

Diabetic Testing with MiniMed

Diabetic testing with the MiniMed is another popular option. This is a continuous glucose monitoring system that uses a tiny catheter under the skin to check blood sugar levels several times per hour over the period of several days.

Diabetic Testing with GlucoWatch

GlucoWatch is an option for diabetic testing of blood sugar levels. This device looks like a watch and it uses electric current to measure blood sugar levels. Levels are measured several times per hour for up to 12 hours. This method is non-invasive, which makes it such a great option. However, it is not recommended to replace traditional finger sticks with the GlucoWatch as of yet. Diabetic testing has come a long way and hopefully in the future non-invasive methods will be mainstream.
