Diabetes Monitoring

Diabetes monitoring is important because it allows diabetics to better control their blood sugar levels. Through diabetes monitoring diabetics are able to learn how their activity levels, meals, stress, and even illness affect their blood sugar levels. With diabetes monitoring patients are able to understand the changes in their blood sugar levels, how insulin affects them, and other complications that might occur as a result of poor diabetes monitoring. These include kidney failure, blindness, and other health problems.

Diabetes Monitoring Supplies

For diabetes monitoring diabetics will need alcohol pads to clean the skin, a glucose meter, test strips, and in some cases even an insulin pump. Different insurance companies will pay different amounts or completely cover some diabetes monitoring supplies. Check with your insurance company to find out what’s covered.

Choosing Diabetes Monitoring Meters

A glucose meter is important for diabetes monitoring purposes. Many insurance companies will cover a glucose meter but only specific ones. Check to find out what’s covered. There are some insulin pumps that also have diabetes monitoring meters included and these are becoming more popular. Choosing a diabetes monitoring meter that works for your lifestyle is important. There are meters that are small and portable, others that have large buttons for the visually impaired, and still others that are pediatric models.

Diabetes Monitoring and Blood Sugar Levels

All diabetes monitoring devices have specific instructions and your doctor may have specific instructions for you regarding how often to check your blood sugar. Keep in mind that all diabetes monitoring devices are different and have different instructions. Two things that won’t change include washing your hands before checking your blood sugar levels and always using an alcohol pad to clean the area.

Tips for Diabetes Monitoring

Sometimes, diabetes monitoring can be challenging and even getting a blood sample at times can be hard. One tip for getting a blood sample from your fingertip to help with diabetes monitoring is to run your hands under hot water. This will help get the blood circulating in your fingertips. Then, let your hand hang below your heart for 60 seconds. Raise your hand to quickly prick it and then place your hand below your heart again. This should be enough to get a small blood sample. If not, try squeezing the base of the finger to the tip to push enough blood out of the prick to use for a blood sample. Diabetes monitoring is an important part of managing diabetes.

Diabetes Monitoring Results

For successful diabetes monitoring it is important to record the results of each blood sugar reading. There are books for recording blood sugar levels you can buy or get from your doctor. Or, you could use a sheet of paper to keep track of different levels. Some diabetics also choose to keep track of the foods they have eaten to improve their diabetes monitoring, too.
